Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius: formula and table

Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius with the exact formula, a reference table and concrete examples.

Published on January 17, 2026

Faced with a thermometer showing 98.6°F or a recipe indicating 350°F, you need to know how to convert to Celsius. This conversion is the reverse of Celsius → Fahrenheit, involving a subtraction and a multiplication.

Understanding the conversion

To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, first subtract 32 (to cancel the original offset), then multiply by 5/9 (the inverse of the 9/5 factor).

📐 Formula

°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 or °C = (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8

📊 Conversion table

Fahrenheit (°F) Celsius (°C) Reference
-40 -40 Equality point
14 -10 Very cold
32 0 Freezing point
68 20 Room temperature
77 25 Warm
98.6 37 Body temperature
212 100 Boiling water
350 176.7 Moderate oven
450 232.2 Hot oven

💡 Practical examples

Example 1: 68°F (comfort temperature)

(68 − 32) ÷ 1.8 = 36 ÷ 1.8 = 20°C. A room at 68°F is 20°C, the ideal working temperature.

Example 2: 350°F (baking oven)

(350 − 32) ÷ 1.8 = 318 ÷ 1.8 ≈ 176.7°C. Standard temperature for baking cookies or a cake.

Example 3: 32°F (freezing)

(32 − 32) ÷ 1.8 = 0°C. 32°F corresponds exactly to the freezing point of water.
