How to convert power units?
Power measures the amount of energy transferred or transformed per unit of time. The SI unit is the Watt (W), defined as one joule per second. Power conversions are essential in mechanical, electrical and thermal engineering.
Watt, kilowatt and megawatt
The Watt is the base unit of the International System. 1 kW = 1,000 W, 1 MW = 1,000,000 W. An LED bulb uses 10 W, a microwave 800 W to 1.5 kW, an electric car 150 kW, a nuclear power plant 1 GW (1,000 MW).
CV (Cheval-vapeur) vs Horsepower (HP)
CV (metric horsepower, or PS in German) is defined in Europe as 75 kgf·m/s = 735.49875 W. HP (British/American horsepower) equals 745.699872 W. These two units are very close but distinct. French vehicle registrations use fiscal horsepower (different from mechanical HP).
